Perry is she is Chicago native who was born to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first television performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played the character. Fearing stress, her parents did not want to see the actress pursue acting until she reached the age of 18. Perry stated she felt timid to perform during high school, but started acting at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred from Boston University. Perry started her acting career in New York after graduation, performing in minor roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homesickness led to Perry come back to California and find work as an actress in the theater. The Other Place was performed by her and her mom on Broadway in 2013 The show featured the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played nine roles in the ABC drama The Family, in 2016. In 2017, she had a minor role on ABC's thriller about politics Scandal in which her father was the main character. That same year she played a young version of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) as her mother in a youthful version. Despite having a family connection to the character, she was offered the part through an audition.
